IIM SIRMAUR ORGANIZED NATIONAL SEMINAR ‘ONLY ONE EARTH’ ON 6TH JUNE, 2022
Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Management, IIM Sirmaur conducted an online seminar titled ‘Only One Earth’ to commemorate World Environment Day. The CSEM was established in 2019 to promote active research in environmental sustainability and steer the institute’s efforts in a similar direction effectively and systematically. The seminar was attended by around 62 participants from across the country. Dr. Arpita Ghosh (organizer of the seminar) delivered the welcome address and the opening remarks shedding light on the themes of the panel discussion for the seminar. She also informed us about the various climate change issues and how we can cater to the socio-economic concerns of the society to create an enabling environment.
Professor Prafulla Agnihotri, Director, IIM Sirmaur delivered the inaugural address. He shared his experience of the present climate change issues our generation faces and what actions are required to preserve and protect our planet. Dr. Kiran Paidipati (moderator) introduced the panelists and provided context for the session. The first speaker was Dr. Sudipto Chatterjee, Assistant Professor, TERI SAS, who shed light on Biodiversity Conservation in the face of global change for sustaining life. The subsequent speaker Dr. Manoj Kumar, Scientist C, FRI Dehradun, drew attention to the vulnerability assessment of the forest ecosystem in the Indian Western Himalayas. Prof. Somnath Mukherjee, Jadavpur University, continued the session by focusing on how we can save the earth by addressing water pollution issues and achieving sustainable development. He focused on the major water pollution issues faced in Himachal Pradesh due to industrial and domestic sources.
Prof. Punyasloke Bhadury, IISER Kolkata, explained the present condition of the Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem in a changing climate and its unique biodiversity components. The final speaker of the seminar Ms. Aparna Saroagi, Head, Credit Risk India, Natwest Group, addressed the audience about climate risks faced by the countries, individuals, and the businesses in the face of changing climate hampering the financial, physical, and mental wellbeing. Dr. Arpita Ghosh delivered the vote of thanks to Director, all eminent speakers for their valuable speech, along with participants, IT team, and CSEM- RAs.
